Supporting residents moving from Housing Benefit and Tax Credits to Universal Credit

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is currently transitioning all working-age recipients of legacy benefits, including Housing Benefit and Tax Credits, to Universal Credit (UC). This process, known as "managed migration," requires affected individuals to move to UC to continue receiving financial support.

If you have received a Migration Notice letter from the DWP, it is important to take action. The letter confirms that your current benefits are ending, and you must apply for UC by the deadline specified in the notice—usually three months from the date of the letter. If your deadline is 5 April 2025, you must submit your UC claim by this date to avoid any disruption to your payments.

How to claim Universal Credit

To submit your Universal Credit claim, visit the official government website at: . The Migration Notice letter will include guidance on how to apply and the web address for the UC application. You will need to create an online account and complete your claim within 28 days of setting up this account.

If you require assistance with your application or cannot apply online, you can contact the Universal Credit Migration Notice Helpline at 0800 169 0328. They can provide support and discuss alternative application methods if necessary.

Why it is important to apply on time

Failing to claim UC by your deadline may result in the termination of your existing benefits. To ensure a smooth transition, it is crucial to submit your application before the specified date.
