Importation of Pet Animals

Whilst rules in relation to the importation of pet animals have been relaxed there are still a number of requirements which anyone bringing pet animals into the country must comply with. The following requirements relate to dogs, cats or ferrets brought to the UK from other EU countries and travelling with their owner.

Whilst rules in relation to the importation of pet animals have been relaxed there are still a number of requirements which anyone bringing pet animals into the country must comply with.

The following requirements relate to dogs, cats or ferrets brought to the UK from other EU countries and travelling with their owner.

  • Animals must be microchipped - this should be done before any of the other procedures for pet travel are carried out.
  • Animals must be vaccinated against rabies - the vaccination should be current and done after microchipping and at least 21 days before travel.
  • Animals must have an EU Pet Passport or an official third country veterinary certificate.
  • Animals must have entered the UK with an (not all carriers and routes are approved).
  • Dogs must have had tapeworm treatment 1-5 days before arrival.

A maximum of 5 pet animals per accompanying owner may be imported.

Non-compliant pets may be removed to quarantine, returned to their country of origin or destroyed.

If more than 5 pets are to be imported or if pets are being imported for commercial reasons then there are additional requirements. Please contact Animal Health if you are proposing importation of more than 5 animals or commercial importation.
